California Road Trip

“Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgandy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries.”

― Jack Kerouac, On the Road

My trip to California was the last trip I took as a single woman. I decided to go on a whim after my good friend Remi told me that he found cheap return tickets SF-London. I thought, why not? I could visit my sister and surprised her. Plus, I just finished a very intensive course, with only 4 – 5 hours of sleeping in the middle of London winter. I thought warmer weather in California would be a nice treat.

Well, my sister was not even in town when we landed (LOL), but I managed to get a room in an AirBnB so all was well. The plan was to go on a road trip to LA and then back to SF. The first few days we spent going around the Bay Area (meeting my sister – I stayed with her for a couple of days) and going around nearby towns with CalTrain. Then, at the end of the week, we rented a car and started our journey.

You must have watched some typical American movies where there are shady motels, long roads, beaches, coffee in diners by the road? That’s my definition of the great American road trip. And I got all of those! I couldn’t be any happier – plus, I did not have to drive at all (I can’t drive on the left side). My responsibilities were just keeping the conversation going by asking stupid ‘what ifs’ questions and passed Remi some snacks. The rest: enjoying the magnificent landscape. The view took my breaths away. I gasped and took countless pictures. We also had the most bizarre weather: in one day we had sun, rain, rainbow, and snow all in just 12 hours!

Too bad I suck at keeping records so I can’t write a helpful guide. I did take some decent shots, so here they are. I’m sorry if the order of my photos doesn’t make any sense.

Big Sur. Easily my favorite spot!
Our first motel
We stopped at every beach we passed by! Heaven.

Fancy oyster dinner looking at this view. We were lucky we got this table.

A dinner in Santa Barbara
Look at all those seals basking in the sun!
And…Monterey!

If you scroll down until this point, thank you! I hope I can write a more curated post which actually helpful for my readers. But I hope these pictures can inspire you to go on a California road trip. Definitely worth it!

  1. I almost made the same trip, but the other way around, in 2014! SF, Monterey, Big Sur, L.A. (and San Diego!) A wonderful trip in the footsteps of Jack Kerouac 😉
Thanks for your great pics, they made me relive my journey!

    1. Ohh that’s nice! We didn’t have enough time to go further and had to cancel some visits (one of them to a national park due to the weather) but now I understand what the writers and poets say when they talk about California.
